For families looking to spice up their trips abroad with a bit of activity and adventure, Spain is a country well worth visiting, whether you are after natural wonders, urban thrills or simply the space to enjoy yourself in new ways. Mountains and Oceans The main thing about Spain that people notice when they dig a little deeper past the stereotypes is its sheer diversity. From the hot and baked south, where towns like Sevilla keep Andalucian traditions alive, to the wet and green north-west, where Gallego is still spoken in parts of Galicia, this a land of contrasts and variety. The Pyrenees mountain range, which separates Spain from France, is one of Europe's top skiing destinations, while the Balearic Islands of the Mediterranean offer superb facilities for anyone who enjoys sailing, canoeing holidays and other water sports. While the countryside in Spain has great scenery and landmarks such as vineyards to explore, the towns and cities are some of Europe's most interesting and vibrant conurbations. Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, is famous for its art galleries and football team, but there is also great food, some of Europe's most iconic buildings and a vast Catalan hinterland to explore. Madrid is the capital of the whole country and its Castilian heart beats with a pride and passion that can only be found in Spain. Getting into the Outdoors This range of countryside and towns, this contrast between the rural and the urban, is one of Spain's major attractions. Walking holidays in Spain are an excellent way to see parts of the country in more depth than travellers can get by simply sitting in a car. There are excellent hiking routes in almost every part of the country and fantastic wildlife to spot in some of the more mountainous regions. Bears, wolves and lynx all lurk in parts of the country and there are some stunning bird species, especially birds of prey, to add to any twitcher's list. Cycling is popular in Spain, as it is in much of Europe and there are great facilities for both road and mountain bikers all around the country. Families may also want to try some other activities such as horse riding, while canoeing holidays are possible on some of Spain's great rivers as well as its coastline. White water rafting or similar in some of the mountainous areas is a particular thrill and its excitement can help bring a family closer together. That is, after all, the point of a family break. With the number of options that exist in Spain for a good-quality activity break, the country could well be a gateway to a whole new way of looking at life and familial relationships.
